Plymouth made it through to the Semi-Finals of the ESFA U15 Inter Association Trophy last night as they overcame Jersey at Langsford Park, Tavistock Football Club.

After tentative open exchanges between the two sides it was Seb Broomfield (Plymstock School) who set up his strike partner Aaron Spear for the opening goal after 17 minutes. From wide on the right Broomfield squared the ball into the penalty area to Spear, the Coombe Dean School striker, then dummied to go right but took the ball to the left of the defender and sent an exquisite curling shot with the outside of his boot across the keeper and into the top left corner of the net.

Three minutes later Broomfield doubled Plymouth’s lead. A strong challenge by centre back, Dan Evans (Ivybridge), near the left touch line won the ball from the Jersey midfield. Evans’ pass down the line to Ashley Piggott (Stoke Damerel) was taken to the bye line by the winger. A perfect cross to the near post saw Broomfield rise in front of the keeper to glance the ball in the net.

Despite Plymouth being reduced to ten men just before the interval, they managed to seal the win on sixty minutes when Broomfield held the ball up well on the edge of the penalty area. He laid it back to Daw whose pass inside the full back found Ashley Piggott in space. He took the ball in his stride and fired a fierce shot across the keeper into the far corner of the net.

Plymouth team manager, Brian Howard, was delighted by his team’s performance particularly after going down to ten men. “It didn’t seem to make any difference to them, they just kept on attacking.” He was especially pleased with the performance of full back Max Scragg (Tavistock) and Luke Young (Ivybridge). “Max didn’t have a good game at Oxford in the last round but he was outstanding today in defence and in supporting down the left side.

Plymouth are now home to Blackheath in the Semi-Final. The game will be played at Tavistock on Tuesday 18th March, 7pm kick off.

In the other Semi-Final, Liverpool will host South Tyneside on Thursday 06 March at Liverpool Soccer Centre, 7pm kick-off.

The final will be played over two legs. Each of the finalists will host a ‘home’ tie.
