Lancashire County Schools’ FA v Essex County Schools’ FA

Tuesday 10th May saw the second ESFA PlayStation Schools’ Cup Inter County Final take place at Birmingham City FC.

This season’s Under 14 Inter County Trophy for Girls’ was contested by Lancashire CSFA and Essex CSFA at St Andrew’ Stadium, home of Birmingham City Football Clun on Tuesday 10th May 2016.

The game started off fast with Essex just edging the pressure, the moved the ball down both wings very well.

All of the early pressure paid off for Essex as they scored the first goal of the day. Maddie Biggs scored the goal as it was passed over from the left wing, crossed into the box by Ellie Mitchell and Biggs was at hand to place the ball into the net.

2 minutes later and Essex went 2 up. Nicholls had switched wings with Mitchell and played a great 1-2 with Biggs. The ball was crossed into Biggs and she slotted to the keepers left again, just inside the post.

The pressure from Essex was clear with only 30 minutes on the clock; they had 6 corners to Lancashire’s 0.

6 minutes before half time and Lancashire got themselves on the score sheet with a great long range effort. The ball was cleared from an earlier shot and Sophie Slater took a touch and hit hard with her right foot from outside the area. The bounce on the ball fell just in front of the Essex keeper and found its way into the goal to put Lancashire back in the game.

The second half began just as the half ended with Essex pressure. With 44 minutes played Essex were awarded a free kick in a dangerous area. The ball was lifted into the box but the header at the far post went just wide.

Lancashire could got themselves on level terms as a corner was put into the area, the first strike was blocked but Lancashire got it straight back into the danger zone but Katie Morrison a the far post miss-hits the ball and hit it wide.

The game opened up and Lancashire were awarded a corner, this was cleared by Essex and a counter attack began. Claudia Zahui took the ball through the middle of the pitch but couldn’t direct the ball around the keeper who made the save.

A free kick to Lancashire after a huge amount of pressure saw Essex block the shot again but were then awarded a free kick a little closer to the goal. Sophie Slater stepped up to take the free kick but Essex block this and start another counter attack. Maddie Biggs, who was on a hat trick, struck the ball but the Lancashire keeper denied her opportunity.

2 minutes added time was indicated and Essex looked to have won the game, but a tackle in the area saw Lancashire get a penalty. Cara Milne-Redhead took the penalty to send the game into extra time, the keeper went to right way, but the shot was just too high for her to make the save.

Extra time began and in the first half both teams had a few half chances but failed to add to the score line.

With 5 minutes of extra time remaining and Lancashire get the goal that they had been hoping for. A mirror image of Essex’s first goal saw Hodgson score after the ball was crossed into her from the left wing. She slotted the ball past the diving keeper to put her side in the lead for the first time in the game.

Since the goal, Essex turned up the pressure and could have got back on level terms. A shot is made and the Lancashire keeper makes the save, only for it to fall back to Essex and a volley is sent into the keepers arms.

Essex kept the pressure on Lancashire right up until the final whistle, which saw Lancashire crowned National Champions for 2015/16.

Both teams were presented with their medals and the Lancashire Captain lifted the trophy with her celebrating team.
