Dyke House progress to Round 3 of the U12 PlayStation 9-a-side Schools’ Cup following a 5 – 1 win over St Leonards.

WILL CAIN claimed a hat-trick as Dyke House College’s effective Year 7 team gave the English Schools’ PlayStation Cup a high five.

In the team’s first outing in the competition, the Hartlepool boys impressed from start to finish, to brush Durham’s dangerous St Leonard’s Catholic School aside 5-1.

Dyke House could have taken the lead with their first attack when Cobhan Ferguson’s attack down the right ended with Joseph Fraser’s effort being cleared off the line.

The home side didn’t have too long to wait when Ferguson, impressive on the right flank, cut inside and curled a lovely finish inside the goalkeeper’s top right corner.

Both teams had their moments before that and St Leonard’s looked dangerous on the break; they were rewarded shortly before the interval with an equaliser.

After half-time, though, Dyke House stepped things up a level. Substitute Lewis Hunter’s first move was to send in a dangerous cross towards Fraser and his marker headed into his own net.

Then Cain, always lively in the middle, took control. His first goal had a slice of good fortune about it when his in-swinging corner was helped over the line by a St Leonard’s defender.

But the former Holy Trinity skipper, and a student on the College’s sports scholarship programme, didn’t need any help with the next two. Both were brilliant strikes from distance to book a place in the next round.

Dyke House had to work harder than the scoreline suggested, with the defence of Aaron Leak, Ashton Sweeting and Archie Pugh solid. When he was required, goalkeeper George Pattison was always alert to rush out and thwart the attacks.

The ESFA would like to congratulate Dyke House on their second round win of the U12 PlayStation 9-a-side Schools’ Cup competition and also thank St Leonard’s RC for their participation in the cup this season - good luck in your other competitions!
