The Windsor Boys’ School win 4-3 on penalties after extra time

The Premier League U16 Schools’ Cup for Boys National Final kicked off four matches over two days at the Manchester Regional Arena on the 24 and 25 April 2017.

Windsor School for Boys have been confirmed as the winners of the 2017 Premier League Under 16 Schools’ Cup for Boys’ after narrowly beating Cardinal Hume Catholic School on penalties. It proved to be a fantastic advert for schools’ football in England as the two teams were very evenly matched throughout the tie with Cardinal Hume’s rock solid defence cancelling out Windsor’s free flowing attacking play, for the most part. Cardinal Hume Catholic School went ahead in the 23rd minute when their corner was only half cleared to Cardinal Hume’s captain, Tomas Howard on the edge of the box. Howard then returned it with interest via a thunderous volley into the bottom corner. Windsor School for Boys equalised five minutes later through Louis Maggs’ predatory finish from six yards out following a corner. The score line remained unchanged throughout the rest of the match and therefore penalties were required for the first time this season, with Bradley Birchmore converting the decisive spot-kick. Both sides deserve tremendous credit for the entertaining spectacle that they produced in front of an extremely partisan and vociferous crowd in challenging weather conditions.

Joyous scenes followed at the final whistle as The Windsor Boys’ School celebrated a hard-fought victory. Cardinal Hume Catholic School, to their credit, accepted their defeat gracefully and thoroughly deserved their applause after the match, as well.
