Barwell Academy Junior School a member of the English Schools’ FA spent the day at St. George’s Park last week as prize winners of the UEFA European Women’s Under-17 Championship 2013/14 ESFA competition.

Fifty Year 5 and Year 6 pupils took part in a coaching day and tour thanks to Continental Tyres, sponsor of the tournament. They also received football kit for their school and thoroughly enjoyed the day.

Sue Foulkes, teacher and PE Coordinator at Barwell said: “We loved being involved in the tournament at the end of last year and we were all impressed with the standard of football. We got involved as a school as flag bearers and even worked on an education pack learning all about women’s football and how to prepare for an international tournament. The pupils have taken a lot from this and to win the prize too is just great for them.”

The FA encouraged schools to attend by putting eleven out of the sixteen matches on in the daytime. ESFA schools were invited to attend for free and over 12,700 attended the matches and experienced a UEFA finals in England.

Eight other ESFA schools have received Continental Tyres football kits and Lego Friends prizes as runners up.

The UEFA Finals were the first to be held outside of Switzerland and to contain 8 teams. Germany won the competition beating Spain in a thrilling final. England took fourth place.
